The Local Environment as a Supportive Operator in Innovation Diffusion
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spatial pattems of technology diffusion determine the capacity of regions and cities to compete in a global market. It is therefore, important to know in what way the local environment can contribute to the attraction of new technology to business locations and what factors differentiate in the support of the local environment in this process. The article wil1 take its starting point in the knowledge capacity of cities. It wil1 then discuss conventional theory on spatial diffusion and review some merits of this theory. Furthermore. a focused approach wil1 be introduced by adopting a communication perspective on technology diffusion. This perspective allows for an exploration of potential barriers (and bridges) in the diffusion process. The article wil1 then present new empirical results on the supportive role of the local environment in technology diffusion on the basis of a large sample of innovative companies in various European cities. Particular attention wil1 be given to the role of the local institutes of higher‘ education and research. This article wil1 conclude with some policy recommendations on an improved use of the local environment in advancing the competitiveness of innovative companies.

Diffusion of Innovation in Mental Health Policy Adoption: What Should We Ask about the Quality of Policy and the Role of Stakeholders in this Process?; Comment on “Cross-National Diffusion of Mental Health Policy”
In his recent study, Gordon Shen analyses a pertinent question facing the global mental health research and practice community today; that of how and why mental health policy is or is not adopted by national governments. This study identifies becoming a World Health Organization (WHO) member nation, and being in regional proximity to countries which have adopted a mental health policy as suppor...
متن کاملAutomatic Face Recognition via Local Directional Patterns
Automatic facial recognition has many potential applications in different areas of humancomputer interaction. However, they are not yet fully realized due to the lack of an effectivefacial feature descriptor. In this paper, we present a new appearance based feature descriptor, the local directional pattern (LDP), to represent facial geometry and analyze its performance inrecognition. An LDP feat...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Smart Boards in Karaj’s Schools based on Evert Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation Theory
This research aims to develop a useful tool based on Evert Rogers’s Diffusion of Innovation Theory and then evaluates the adoption degree of an educational innovation (Smart Board) in Karaj’s Schools. The mixed method approach with explanatory research design has been adopted; this design consisted of two sequential phases, described here as phase 1 (Quantitative) and phase 2 (Qualitative). The...
متن کاملBalanced clusters and diffusion process in signed networks
In this paper we study the topology effects on diffusion process in signed networks. Considering a simple threshold model for diffusion process, it is extended to signed networks and some appropriate definitions are proposed. This model is a basic model that could be extended and applied in analyzing dynamics of many real phenomena such as opinion forming or innovation diffusion in social netwo...
